This week Newcastle Community Pantry celebrated its first birthday at its original Blakelaw site. The Newcastle Community Pantry is a membership-based model, working in areas of multiple deprivation. the Pantry operates a cooperative approach to providing affordable food for local people across the City region.
The Pantry network now has three sites across the City, including Blakelaw Community Centre, Tree Top Village Walker, and the Newcastle United Foundation building. The network has over 220 members across the network, including 92 at the Blakelaw Community Pantry.
The Birthday celebration was attended by local members of the community and a few special guests including Newcastle Foodbank Patron The Right Reverend Dr Helen-Ann Hartley who said “In one sense your heart breaks when you come in and see the reality of the need of people. But actually, this is a genuine place where community is being forged and built, where people feel supported and have a sense of dignity when coming to access the services of the foodbank and the pantry.”
The Newcastle Community Pantry is part of the Your Local Pantry network and is supported in Newcastle by Watches of Switzerland.
